- <p> DIED. Peter De Vries, 83, novelist; in Westport, Connecticut.
- De Vries' purest talents were for wordplay and acerbic social
- observation. "Some marriages founder on deception, others are
- founded on it," remarked a character in one of his 26 novels.
- Among his better-known works are The Tunnel of Love, an account
- of a hapless cartoonist that inspired a Broadway play and a
- movie, and Consenting Adults, a suburban bedroom epic.
