  15. <p>     DIED. Peter De Vries, 83, novelist; in Westport, Connecticut.
  16. De Vries' purest talents were for wordplay and acerbic social
  17. observation. "Some marriages founder on deception, others are
  18. founded on it," remarked a character in one of his 26 novels.
  19. Among his better-known works are The Tunnel of Love, an account
  20. of a hapless cartoonist that inspired a Broadway play and a
  21. movie, and Consenting Adults, a suburban bedroom epic.
